About Josephine F Esquivel-Upshaw
Dr. Esquivel-Upshaw completed her Doctor of Dental Medicine degree from the University of the Philippines in 1991. She completed her residency training in Prosthodontics at Northwestern University in 1994 with a Masters in Advanced Dental Education and a Certificate in Prosthodontics. In 2009 she completed a Masters in Clinical Investigation at the University of Florida College of Medicine.
Dr. Esquivel-Upshaw started her academic career at the University of Florida College of Dentistry where she worked as a clinical fellow in 1994. She became an Assistant Professor in 1995 and was promoted to Associate Professor with tenure in 2000. She moved to San Antonio, Texas to work at the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio where she worked in the General Dentistry department as a group practice leader until 2006. She moved back to UF in 2006 as an Associate Professor and was granted tenure again in 2009. She currently works in the Department of Restorative Dental Sciences in the Division of Prosthodontics.
Dr. Esquivel-Upshaw is an active member of the American Association of Dental Research, International Association of Dental Research and the American College of Prosthodontists. She is a journal reviewer for several dental journals including Dental Materials and the Journal of Prosthodontics to name a few. Her patient care activities include fixed and removable denture prostheses mainly for clinical research.

Research Profile
Dr. Esquivel-Upshaw is heavily involved with research. She has over thirty peer-reviewed publications in high impact journals, several book chapters in dental textbooks and scientific abstracts. She has obtained funding both from NIH and industry. Her research areas of interest include ceramics, dental materials, wear of enamel, and clinical research. She conducts treatment of patients in the College of Dentistry’s Dental Clinical Research Unit, which is affiliated with the CTSI. She currently has collaborations with Chemical Engineering, Materials Science Engineering and IFAS.
